Theatre (or theater, see spelling differences) is the branch of the performing arts defined by Bernard Beckerman as what "occurs when one or more persons, isolated in time and/or space, present themselves to another or others." By this broad definition, theatre has existed since the dawn of man, as a result of human tendency for storytelling. Since its inception, theatre has come to take on many forms, utilizing speech, gesture, music, dance, and spectacle, combining the other performing arts, often as well as the visual arts, into a single artistic form.

The word derives from the Ancient Greek theatron (θέατρον) meaning, "the seeing place."

What is a good musical theatre ballad for a female teen mezzo soprano to sing for an audition?
Q. I'm auditioning for a musical theatre course and I need two contrasting songs from musical theatre. I already have my upbeat song picked out now I just need a slower song. The catch is it has to be written before 1960...

A. WOW... it needs to be BEFORE 1960 huh? The automatically eliminates the frantic years of the 1980's when so many good musicals got written... unlike some of these other answers.. from people who merely looked up the composers and even got the names of the songs wrong or the year they were written was AFTER 1960.. I actually KNOW the songs... No matter... here are some for you and the titles are accurate.. they are NOT just the first line of the song: a little brains a little talent.. Damn Yankees a wonderful guy.. South Pacific blow gabriel blow... Anything Goes CAN'T help lovin' dat man o' MINE.. Show Boat always true to you in my fashion.. Kiss me Kate bewitched, bothered and bewildered.. Pal Joey BILL... Show Boat DOIN' [cont.]

A. A Broadway director I was talking to recently said that most Broadway performers are coming from Carnegie Mellon, Boston Conservatory and a school out of Cincinnati (I can't remember the name.). That being said, I imagine it's very competitive. You'll get a fabulous education and network with talented people!

Theatre (Greek "theatron"), enjoys the distinction of two spellings: in British English, "theatre" and in American English, "theater". There is no technical distinction between the meanings of the two spellings, however most theatre artists prefer the English spelling because it creates a historical nod to the ancient Greek term theatron. Some also use the American spelling to designate a theatre building and the English term to reference the art itself, as in the "art of theatre." Theatre is that branch of the performing arts concerned with the creation of stories or narratives for (or with) an audience using combinations of acting, speech, gesture, music, dance, object manipulation, sound and spectacle — indeed, any one or more elements of the other performing arts. In addition to standard narrative dialogue style, theatre takes such forms as opera, musicals, ballet, mime, kabuki, classical Indian dance, Chinese opera, mummers' plays, and pantomime.
