Editing is the process of preparing language, images, sound, video, or film through correction, condensation, organization, and other modifications in various media. A person who edits is called an editor. In a sense, the editing process originates with the idea for the work itself and continues in the relationship between the author and the editor. Editing is, therefore, also a practice that includes creative skills, human relations, and a precise set of methods.

How do you become a continuity editor?
Q. I'm really interested in this aspect of filmmaking. People don't like to watch movies with me because I'm a little vocal about inconsistencies in movies. And, I don't just mean that in one shot the beer is open, the next its closed and the next its open. I mean things like costumes being in sync with the time period, or the way the characters are speaking. I think being a continuity editor would be perfect for me but I don't know where to begin trying to get to a job like that. Is there an educational course to take or is it all about knowing the right people?

A. As a script supervisor (the crew member responsible for catching continuity problems during shooting), you would not have anything to do with the costumes, period, characters, or speech UNLESS they were not the same for all shots within a scene. For example, if a coat was buttoned one moment and opened the next, without there being a scripted reason or believable gap in story time for the change. The style of the coat would not be your concern. FIRST, go to film school. THEN it's all about knowing the right people.
