A. First, get some experience...and get an agent. You could look through the Yellow Pages for an agent; or, better yet...contact the Better Business Bureau...they'll know more. If you can find a local acting troupe, or Little Theatre, perhaps someone there can put you in the right direction for a reputable agent. Also, Little Theatre productions are great for your acting experiences, as you'll be working with people of varying ages and experiences, rather than all your own age and likewise experience(s. AND...newspapers often come out and review plays...and mention actors. These kinds of clippings you can save for your resume. Oh...theatre...British English. One last thing...break a leg!

Any ideas for acting out a movie in 10 minutes?
Q. I have a midtern for my intro to acting class, we have to act out a movie in ten minutes. The thing is me and my group are totally stumpted. Can anyone think of a movie that would be easy to act with two girls and two guys? Girls can play boys and vice versa. We were thinking a comedy or action. Preferably something not too difficult to understand. Nothing lame, something recent. We also don't want to do something that's already been done. Such as zoolander, wedding crashers, 40 virgin, those are just some of the past. My group is desperate, and if anyone can think of anything it would be greatly appreciated.

How do I start an acting career when I'm still in High School?
Q. I'm a seventeen year old high school student and I am extremely interested in becoming an actress. I took an Acting Workshop class at my school two years ago and I got a 90% A and the teacher said I have "Stage Precense". I've been interested in Acting as a career since I was five or six years old. So, my question is this: What should I do to pursue a career in acting? I live on Long Island (close to NYC). Should I print up a resume now and take headshots after February (when I get my braces off) and then go on auditions over the summer? My aunt says I should go to college, which I want to, but I want to make sure I've exhausted every effort to become an actress first. So should I take a year off to pursue acting and then go to college? [cont.]

A. You should go to college, but there are performing arts schools. Or while your in college, check out if there are any local productions or the theatre club. There is a way to get your education and be an actress and I'm sure many of the performing arts schools will give you the foundation to get your career off the ground.

What are the best acting classes in Chicago?
Q. I am interested in enrolling in some acting classes here in Chicago. I've been acting for about ten years and really need to brush up my skills. I know of many - ActOne, Victory Gardens, Steppenwolf, Acting Studio Chicago, Actors Studio - what are some opionions on the type of classes? And where should someone with experience start?
Asked by Steve J - Fri Aug 15 21:59:36 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You need to network! You already know where to go, so the best thing for you to do is ask to see if you can watch a class and see how well the teacher teaches, watch some shows/plays that some of these students are acting in so you can evaluate the kind of talent that these studios have. Contact the universities/colleges/the atres and talk to the acting profs/teachers/managers there and see who they would recommend as an acting coach. Everyone will know/know of each other so finding out information should be easy.

What are some good acting classes to start out with?
Q. So I've been looking into acting classes and I was wondering what would be better Acting intensive, or actor workshop? what do they both do? And if I'm not right for either, what are good classes to start out with? Oh and if you could, could you put in order of classes? I'm dedicating my entire year to training for my acting career So I'm going to be taking different classes all the time Could you organize all the classes from beginning to semi-advanced, and then to advanced or whatever?

A. well acting intensives and acting workshops are not mutually exclusive. to answer your question the top four are as follows (trying to put them in order of importance though some disagree). scene study. this is the base of everything. you need to know how to take apart a scene and performs it. there are various techniques, adler, miesner, etc. this is essential because it will not only teach you acting skills but also how to approach a part/scene. -cold reading. cold reading is basically learning how to audition when you have no or little time with the script beforehand (thus a cold read) . this is important because you need a good audition to land any part. -a commercial class. people think this is important because as a… [cont.]

Where do I start in my acting career?
Q. Okay, here's the deal. I am in middle school at the moment, and I really am into acting. The only problem is that I can not start with a Drama Club, because there isn't one. Also, I do not have any Acting Schools to go to in my area. What do I do? I need more experience in acting, and I am planning on becoming an actress! I live in Florida, Northern Florida.

A. Start doing a search for actors agentcies, but be carful cause some of them are scams. After that just do everything you can & accept/ audition for anything in plays (nomatter the part) Sooner or later you'll get "noticed". Especially since you live in Florida.

How can I start my acting career?
Q. I am 13 and just ending a play at the local theatre. In total I have done 5 plays and 2 musicals over 2 years and my school has an acting class. I want to try auditioning for films or tv but I don't know if I should take acting classes (outside of school) or if what I've done is enough to get an agent already.

A. When you are as young as you are it is best to stick with the stage. The film and TV world is complicated and if you pay close attention you'll find that all child stars end up jaded and living misdirected lives in the long run. Wait until your of age and in the meantime be a good student on how to get things done. I would move to LA and hook up with central casting to begin with They will cast you in extra roles and you can see how that world works. You will also need good headshots to shop yourself around. This was one of the more difficult choices for me when I moved here because there are so many of them. Use these guys Just be patient keep a positive attitude and do the right thing at the right time. You'll make it.

Q. I haven't acted many times, but i can be such a drama queen, says my mom. And i love being in plays, and seeing them too! Its hard for me though because i am young, and my parents probably don't want to hire an agent unless they think i am serious about acting which i am.

A. A lot of people will tell you to get an agent. An agent is only something you should seek once you are a trained, polished, working actor. You should never pay an agent, agency, manager, or casting director any money or fees prior to you landing a job they sent you on. Then, and only then, do they get paid - and that is a percentage of what you make - usually 10 - 15%. It seems to be a popular myth in this forum that you NEED an agent to be a working actor. That is simply not true. You can find a lot of auditions and jobs on your own without an agent. I have done professional theatre, films, and national television all without an agent. If you are really going to go for NYC or LA and have already built up your resume, have years of… [cont.]

Is voiceover acting something you have to be naturally good at ?
Q. Would you say that voiceover acting is something you have to just be naturally good at, or is it something anyone can grow to become good at? I'm trying to do some voiceovers for something I'm doing, I don't particularly want to since I don't talk a lot anyways, but do you think it would get much easier the more you try? Thanks. Peter. This was put after hawkthree and Kabs replies. The thing is I don't want to be an actor, I just have to do the VO as part of it.

A. -The only thing you don't have a lot of control over is whether you have a voice that is in demand for voiceover's. Generally a high pitched squeaky voice won't do no matter how well you act. Like a lot of things, the ability to do voiceovers will improve with proactice.

How long should I take acting lessons before I search out an agent?
Q. How long should I take acting lessons before I start looking for an agent to help me with my passion for acting?

A. Training is a continuous thing. To get a Commercial agent, you need: -An IMPROV class -A Commercial class -An auditioning/cold reading class -And a GREAT headshot You can accomplish these things for a commercial agent in a minimum of 3 months. A theatrical agent (film/tv) can take longer (years). Most good theatrical agents won't see you unless you're SAG, have a polished resume, and a demo reel. You can get an agent multiple ways. Here are a few common ways: -Mail in an unsealed manilla envelope with a CONCISE coverletter and headshot with the resume stapled on the back. If you have a demoreel include that too. -Attend a showcase and impress them. By showcase I do not mean scammy conventions like IMTA, IPOP, Proscout, or Best New… [cont.]

A. Acting careers are built over time, not jump started. At 15 you need to concern yourself with the years of training it will take to give you the skill to have a shot at being a professional actor. It does not start with agencies or films.

How many beers until you start acting a bit differently but still under control?
Q. Im 150 pounds and I'm wondering how many beers it should take to start acting a bit differenly but still be under control. I know it's different for different people and beers and if you ate and stuff. But just for average how many beers do you think it would take for a 150 pounder to start acting differenly without faking it but still be mostly under control for a new drinker.

A. When I drank it took me about 9 beers to FEEL normal, as in I didn't have the shakes anymore. By about beer # 12 I had a little buzz, and anything after 15 or so and I was an idiot. So I would say 9 beers to be totally relaxed and in control for me...I weighed 170 at that time.

What are some good acting exercises to practice for an audition for a play?
Q. I'm a freshman, and we're doing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. We're not given the script, she will randomly give us one at the auditions.

A. The key thing is to relax. What I do is that I bend down completely, and slowly come back up. It'll relieve some tension in your back. Stretch out all your body parts. Neck, arms, everything to relax you. Then sit quietly for a few seconds, eyes closed. Ignore all distractions, and uncross your legs and unfold your hands and just sit there and focus on breathing. This will help relax the muscles after stretching them. Then when you get a hold of that script, just try to look over it for a second and try to get into the character the script needs you to be. You just have to feel it. Being relaxed will help.

Q. I'm a freshman, and we're doing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I've auditioned for things before, and I figure that I should start getting used to them early as I can, to get more comfortable. What are some acting exercises I can do for practice? We're not given the script, she will randomly give us one at the auditions.

How to land an acting/modeling job wile living in a small town in Michigan?
Q. I live in Michigan, not far from Grand Rapids but I am seriously wanting to find a way to audition for a modeling or acting gig for a teenage role. Help would be appreciated, thanks! Oh, i've tried Craig's list and Google!

A. I would stick to craigslist, and stay away from google. What was most sucsessful for me was checking and searching craigslist EVERYDAY, you need to be consistant and always looking. Don't only look in one area too. You're near grand rapids, so Chicago is what... almost 3 hours away, and Detroit about 2 and a half...Look at those cities too. Check for craigslist auditions in those area's, and make a day trip out of it. If people what you, and you're within reasonable driving distance then you should try and make the trek out there. I'm sure they're other modelling agencies in Grand Rapids area...or atleast I would assume, I could be wrong. Look into some of the local college's too, filmstudents are always casting in one way or… [cont.]

What are some great acting tips for aspiring actresses?
Q. I really like acting but am not very good. I am in a class skit thing and I want to make myself sound unbelievable. I also really want a lead part in the school play this year. I keep looking on Google for tips but I am very well hoping that someone here will have some answers. I really need some key tips to help become a better actress. P.s I can be really loud when I want to be, most of the time I am shy. How do I break out of this protective shell?

A. Well don't be embarrassed to be loud and crazy put it all out there. Other actors when they work with Nicolas cage they say him putting it all out there not worrying what others think is what makes him a great actor. Hope this will help.

How can I find acting auditions that require me to send in an audition tape?
Q. I've been looking up a lot of acting auditions for a while now & I rarely see any that ask to submit an audition tape. I'd love to make an audition tape for any auditions, but I don't know how and where I can find these. Can anyone help?

A. I'm an LA Actor giving you the real deal! Audition tapes are a thing of the past. Unless you're a star, you need to be in the SAME state where the auditions and shootings are being held. Sometimes, however, you will have to record your auditon and send it via email. If you want to find MAJOR auditions, you NEED an agent. Here's the cliffsnotes version of what you can do to do to get into acting and eventually get an agent: 1.Educate yourself first! Wallach Michael and… [cont.]
