How do I start an acting career when I'm still in High School?
Q. I'm a seventeen year old high school student and I am extremely interested in becoming an actress. I took an Acting Workshop class at my school two years ago and I got a 90% A and the teacher said I have "Stage Precense". I've been interested in Acting as a career since I was five or six years old. So, my question is this: What should I do to pursue a career in acting? I live on Long Island (close to NYC). Should I print up a resume now and take headshots after February (when I get my braces off) and then go on auditions over the summer? My aunt says I should go to college, which I want to, but I want to make sure I've exhausted every effort to become an actress first. So should I take a year off to pursue acting and then go to college? [cont.]

A. You should go to college, but there are performing arts schools. Or while your in college, check out if there are any local productions or the theatre club. There is a way to get your education and be an actress and I'm sure many of the performing arts schools will give you the foundation to get your career off the ground.

What are some acting exercises that you can do at home in order to strengthen your acting abilities?
Q. What are some things that you can do at home if you're in the middle of nowhere and you can't afford to go to an acting class?

A. You said it sister! well first off, you should go on the internet and seach "scripts", pick one out, pick a character that you'd want to be, then get someone else to work with you (as a different character). After u guys act out part of the script, u can ask the other person what u could do to make it more "believable". and keep practicing!

How to persue an acting and singing career?
Q. I have been wanting to Act and sing ever since I was way young. Im taking acting and singing classes while being in plays and concerts in and outside of school. I am planning on pursuing it while working very hard after I graduate high school. I was just wondering though, with all the big celebrities that we see and hear of today, is that what they did to help pursue their career? What else did they do if you know? Thanks!

A. That's awsome that your doing all ur school plays and everything, so keep that up. Some steps you need to take would be getting your headshots, and then finding an agent. Some acting schools bring in agents to search for talent, or there are now development centers that can help you find an agent. The agent will send you to auditions with casting directors and hopefully they will hire you. Then you just pretty much try your best to work your way up from there. As for singing, a few musicians have gotten discovered by making demo tapes and sending them to record companies. You really just want to sing anywhere you can get a gig, anywhere anyone will see you- its always a new chance to be discovered, such as school plays, talents shows,… [cont.]

How can I start my acting career?
Q. I am 13 and just ending a play at the local theatre. In total I have done 5 plays and 2 musicals over 2 years and my school has an acting class. I want to try auditioning for films or tv but I don't know if I should take acting classes (outside of school) or if what I've done is enough to get an agent already.

A. When you are as young as you are it is best to stick with the stage. The film and TV world is complicated and if you pay close attention you'll find that all child stars end up jaded and living misdirected lives in the long run. Wait until your of age and in the meantime be a good student on how to get things done. I would move to LA and hook up with central casting to begin with They will cast you in extra roles and you can see how that world works. You will also need good headshots to shop yourself around. This was one of the more difficult choices for me when I moved here because there are so many of them. Use these guys Just be patient keep a positive attitude and do the right thing at the right time. You'll make it.

What is your best advice for my acting and writing debut?
Q. In a few weeks I may very well be writing a short play for a professional theatre company to be performed in front of 400 people at a nearby theatre. I will be attending workshops for playwrights to devise a play with a disabled theme. The playwrights will have the opportunity to act!! That means, if I have the courage, I could very well be on stage acting at a local theatre!! I am going to voluteer. Some of the actors are disabled. I especially want to hear from other people involved in theatre or who have had some experience. I have written a few plays, but not acted in a professional theatre. I will be so pleased to hear from you.

Is voiceover acting something you have to be naturally good at ?
Q. Would you say that voiceover acting is something you have to just be naturally good at, or is it something anyone can grow to become good at? I'm trying to do some voiceovers for something I'm doing, I don't particularly want to since I don't talk a lot anyways, but do you think it would get much easier the more you try? Thanks. Peter. This was put after hawkthree and Kabs replies. The thing is I don't want to be an actor, I just have to do the VO as part of it.
Asked by Peter - Thu Jul 23 15:15:04 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. -The only thing you don't have a lot of control over is whether you have a voice that is in demand for voiceover's. Generally a high pitched squeaky voice won't do no matter how well you act. Like a lot of things, the ability to do voiceovers will improve with proactice.

How can I get an acting agent so I can get into the acting business?
Q. I really want to be an actress and I've heard that you need an agent to get you auditions and stuff like that. How would I go about getting one. I live in a small town and acting agents don't just come knocking on doors.
Asked by Kj - Sat Nov 7 16:17:09 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You heard wrong. Agents don't sign people who want to be actors. You need to have several years of training and experience before you can get a legitimate agent. If you have not taken acting classes and have not been cast in leading roles in school and community theater for a few years, no agent is even going to look at you. You get an agent after you have experience and are willing to move to LA or NY to advance your career.

Q. How long should I take acting lessons before I start looking for an agent to help me with my passion for acting?
Asked by __A_YAHOO_USER__ - Tue Dec 8 18:58:23 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Training is a continuous thing. To get a Commercial agent, you need: -An IMPROV class -A Commercial class -An auditioning/cold reading class -And a GREAT headshot You can accomplish these things for a commercial agent in a minimum of 3 months. A theatrical agent (film/tv) can take longer (years). Most good theatrical agents won't see you unless you're SAG, have a polished resume, and a demo reel. You can get an agent multiple ways. Here are a few common ways: -Mail in an unsealed manilla envelope with a CONCISE coverletter and headshot with the resume stapled on the back. If you have a demoreel include that too. -Attend a showcase and impress them. By showcase I do not mean scammy conventions like IMTA, IPOP, Proscout, or Best New… [cont.]

How important is it to study acting in college to be a successful actor?
Q. How important do you think it is to study acting (i.e. be an acting/theatre/drama/perf orming arts major) in college to be a good, skillful, and successful (not in terms of becoming some major motion picture star, but in terms of knowing your craft) actor?

A. not really that much in terms of becoming a "star" like you stated. however, it can help cultivate your talent adn possibly lnad you on broadway much easier than what it takes to be a "star." most of the tv stars and movie stars could not do plays and even get past the first round of broadway casting (ex. Vin Diesel, Ice Cube, Paris Hilton, etc.).

How do you find a reliable acting agency?
Q. I'll be in Oklahoma for a while, and I was wondering where in oklahoma you find a reliable acting agency? (please don't say "talent agencies don't want nobodies" because I have a couple credits from indie film extras and local commercials) Anyone know of any acting agencies in oklahoma?

A. Reliable talent (acting) agencies are usually SAG/AFTRA affiliated or franchised. You can check for SAG franchised agents here: They also take a commission (10-20%) of what you make on jobs. They shouldn't charge you any upfront fees or require you to use their photographers/classes, although they can recommend some. Here is a complete list of agents in Oklahoma: These are agents I'd recommend: Visit their websites and do a background check with Better Business Bureau. Then follow submission guidelines or send in headshot & resume. Good luck! Hope I helped! Tip: Don't go with John Robert Powers or John Casablancas. They charge huge upfront fees and don't get you anywhere. (Scams!)

What are some good acting exercises to practice for an audition for a play?
Q. I'm a freshman, and we're doing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I've auditioned for things before, and I figure that I should start getting used to them early as I can, to get more comfortable. What are some acting exercises I can do for practice? We're not given the script, she will randomly give us one at the auditions.
Asked by Jessica - Sat Aug 30 18:57:59 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The key thing is to relax. What I do is that I bend down completely, and slowly come back up. It'll relieve some tension in your back. Stretch out all your body parts. Neck, arms, everything to relax you. Then sit quietly for a few seconds, eyes closed. Ignore all distractions, and uncross your legs and unfold your hands and just sit there and focus on breathing. This will help relax the muscles after stretching them. Then when you get a hold of that script, just try to look over it for a second and try to get into the character the script needs you to be. You just have to feel it. Being relaxed will help.

We're not given the script, she will randomly give us one at the auditions.

What are the benefits in completing a 4 year acting university?
Q. I want to major in acting, will majoring in acting help me out in TV Shows and Movies, or should I stick with the 10 year plan of becoming a plastic suregon? (which I don't want to even do) I just love acting.

A. Let's be realistic. It's very rare for people to actually make it as a tv or movie star. Chances are, its not going to happen. Given some of the poor actors and actresses we have out there making millions of dollars, it takes more than skill! I'm not saying you have to become a plastic surgeon but I think you should either a) take two majors--acting and something more practical or b) major in something practical and minor in acting. After all, there is a chance you will have to take out loans and you will need to be able to find a good job after college. If acting doesn't work out, there isn't much you can get with a degree in acting.
