How do I qualify for the 5% long term capital gain rate?
Q. I am trying to do some tax planning prior to selling a stock I have held for a long time (over 5 years). From my understanding, long term capital gains are taxed at 15% rate unless your taxable income would otherwise put you into a lower tax bracket, in which the long term rate is then 5%. Is the gain from the sale of the tax part of the taxable income? I have a very small annual income of about $20,000, but when I sell the stock, I will have a gain of about $500,000. Will it be taxed at 15% rate or due to my low income, will it be taxed at 5%? And if I wait until 2008 (maybe 2009) will it be taxed at 0%? The tax laws are very confusing in this area. Please help me out.

A. Your long term capital gains rate will be 5% if your overall bracket would be 15% or less if the break didn't exist for the LTCG. To figure that, you would include the capital gains amount - their rate then drops to figure your actual tax. With half a million in capital gains, your rate would be WAY over 15% so your LTCG rate would be 15%. With that much in capital gains, there's nothing you are going to do to bring your rate down much, no matter how much other income you do or don't have, unless you spread the stock sales over maybe 10 or 15 years, and by that time it's hard to tell if the LTCG rate tax break would still exist - depends on what congress does.

What is the largest power of 5 that divides the product of the first 100 positive integers?
Q. I need help on how to solve this problem, can you please explain how you did so I can understand. Power of 5 is like 5^x and remember, it's the LARGEST power of 5 that DIVIDES the PRODUCT of 1x2x3...98x99x100. Thanks! The product of those integers is a multiple of 5 because I've found a pattern showing it would end with 0. I still don't have the answer though.
Asked by Ayereiss K - Thu Jun 25 16:40:07 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The only numbers that contribute to this power of 5 are those that are multiples of 5. There are 100/5 = 20 multiples of 5. Also, multiples of 25 = 5^2 contribute another power of 5 apiece. There are 100/25 = 4 multiples of 25. So, the largest power of 5 dividing 100! is 20 + 4 = 24.

How bad does a 5 day drug suspension look on my college application?
Q. I received a 5 day out of school suspension for being under the influence of marijuana at school. I am currently a freshman and I am 15 years old. I have a 3.5 gpa, I play 3 sports at the school, in debate club, in all honors courses and I speak fluent spanish. I have a sister at Georgetown and I plan on going to a big university as well. After today drugs will be out of my life for sure. Do i have any chance at attending a decent college.

A. They don't look at that stuff at all. Universities only look at what you send them like grades, activites, SAT scores, or letters of recommendation. I had a 5 day suspension for alcohol and have skipped weeks of school at a time and I still got into most of the UC's I applied to including UCLA. Just make sure to really stop doing those things or your gpa might get hurt. Good luck!

A. 1. Star Anise (Bunga Lawang) native to southern China multiple fruit of the tree Illicium verum, which is a member of the magnolia family (Magnoliaceae),also called the "Indian Almond". The fruit is picked unripe, then dried in the sun to a brown colour. The fruit is always dried, and never eaten fresh. 2. Cinnamon (Kayu Manis) originates from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) Cinnamon comes from the bark of the cinnamon trees. In Malay spices vocabulary, it is called "kayu manis" literally meaning sweet wood. The light, intricate flavor of Ceylon cinnamon makes it the cinnamon of choice for dishes which do not have a lot of conflicting flavors competing. It will star in such dishes as custard, cinnamon ice cream, Dutch pears, stewed rhubarb, [cont.]

Q. I don't have a scale but I have this recipe that says I need 100g of eggwhites. How much would 5 eggwhites weight on average? A. From a large egg... egg whites weigh about 33 grams... so you need 3 egg whites (to get you to 99 grams). A whole large egg weighs about 50 grams, the yolk is about 17 g and the whites is 33 g. 5 egg whites would be about 166 grams. However, it all depends upon how old your eggs are. The fresher the eggs the more egg whites you have... the older the egg, the more chance you'll have less due to evaporation. You can use 4 egg whites to be sure to get 100g. A little over shouldn't ruin the recipe.

How could my 5-month old nephew have blue eyes while the rest of the family has dark brown eyes?
Q. I am baffled, and hope there is a genetics guru here to help. My 5-month old newphew has stunning bright blue eyes, yet neither his mother, father, either grandfather, and either grandmother have blue eyes. My mom and dad both have dark brown eyes, and his paternal grandparents also have almost reddish brown eyes. Is is true that babies can be born with blue eyes and then the eye pigment changes colors? A. It might be that your family had blue eyes way before. You should do a family background check. Genetics can be complicated (believe me, I took a course). There are dominant and recessive genes, on where the Dominant is the physical feature. So lets take capital B for brown eyes, and lowercase b for blue eyes. Since your nephew has blue eyes, his parents must of inherited the recessive blue eye gene from their parents. The possible alleles for the parents are (mom) Bb and (dad) Bb. Since the capital B is dominant and its brown, the parents came out with Brown eyes. But if you look, they also have a lowercase b for blue eyes which they must have inherited. So that means that their families had blue eyes at a point. An offspring inherits one… [cont.]

How many different 5 card poker hands would contain only cards of a single suit?
Q. I know there are 2,598,960 different 5 card poker hands but I don't know how many would only contain a single suit.
Asked by Wonderwoman - Fri Dec 5 00:07:25 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There are 4 suits, and for each suit, 13 cards. You're choosing 5 of them, so 4(13C5) = 5148 hands. You can also solve this by looking up the frequency of the types of hands in poker. What you want is the number of flushes plus straight flushes plus royal flushes.

What can a single mother of 5 children do for income?
Q. What can a single mother of 5 children (4,5,14,15,&22)do for income in the philippines? If u lived in the philippines u would know how the economy is and how hard it is to find a job. She has tried telemarketing but does not pay enough, especially after transportation fare.

How i conect 5 computers to one main computer with vista home?
Q. I have 5 computers with vista or can be XP and i want to conect a main computer to all to have control conecting to internet and printing. how can i do this?

A. I would not use a computer to control the network. Use a router - that's what it is designed to do. As far as printing, you can use a network print server or just share printers connected to the computers on the network

What does 4.5 on the scale mean on the Sears energy efficiency labels? Is a high number good or a low number?
Q. One energy guide label on the website has a ranking of 4.5 on the scale and the other has a ranking of 1 on the scale. What is "the scale" and which is better, a high number or a low number?

A. I think that you may be referring to a SEER rating. That is of energy efficiency, and the higher the number the more efficient.
