How do I start an acting career when I'm still in High School?
Q. I'm a seventeen year old high school student and I am extremely interested in becoming an actress. I took an Acting Workshop class at my school two years ago and I got a 90% A and the teacher said I have "Stage Precense". I've been interested in Acting as a career since I was five or six years old. So, my question is this: What should I do to pursue a career in acting? I live on Long Island (close to NYC). Should I print up a resume now and take headshots after February (when I get my braces off) and then go on auditions over the summer? My aunt says I should go to college, which I want to, but I want to make sure I've exhausted every effort to become an actress first. So should I take a year off to pursue acting and then go to college? [cont.]

A. You should go to college, but there are performing arts schools. Or while your in college, check out if there are any local productions or the theatre club. There is a way to get your education and be an actress and I'm sure many of the performing arts schools will give you the foundation to get your career off the ground.

Any ideas for acting out a movie in 10 minutes?
Q. I have a midtern for my intro to acting class, we have to act out a movie in ten minutes. The thing is me and my group are totally stumpted. Can anyone think of a movie that would be easy to act with two girls and two guys? Girls can play boys and vice versa. We were thinking a comedy or action. Preferably something not too difficult to understand. Nothing lame, something recent. We also don't want to do something that's already been done. Such as zoolander, wedding crashers, 40 virgin, those are just some of the past. My group is desperate, and if anyone can think of anything it would be greatly appreciated.

How can I get better and better at acting besides acting classes and joining local plays?
Q. I mean, is there a way that you could practice acting alone in your house everyday. Because unlike singing, sports or playing an instrument which you could practice and train everyday with the right tools to become the best in that certain field, acting is different. How do you train yourself in acting so you can become the best in it? And is it just subjective, meaning other factors like the roles given to you, the emotional depth of the roles given to you, natural talent and your personality affect how your being good at acting is determined?
Asked by frosty - Thu May 8 05:28:33 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is such a huge question. Here's what I think: Everything you do in your life adds to you being an actor. Every skill you have, every experience you have... is what you bring to your characters. So, you are "practicing" everyday if you are paying attention. Your tools are basically your voice, your body and your brain. So push yourself to expand those all the time. And yes, acting is totally subjective. You will never be able to control whether other people think you are "good" or not... might as well stop trying. Every actor who you consider to be "good" or even the best... has been fired from one job or another. The key? YOU have to believe you're good. YOU have to know that you are the best you can be. So, do what you… [cont.]

A. You said it sister! well first off, you should go on the internet and seach "scripts", pick one out, pick a character that you'd want to be, then get someone else to work with you (as a different character). After u guys act out part of the script, u can ask the other person what u could do to make it more "believable". and keep practicing!

How to persue an acting and singing career?
Q. I have been wanting to Act and sing ever since I was way young. Im taking acting and singing classes while being in plays and concerts in and outside of school. I am planning on pursuing it while working very hard after I graduate high school. I was just wondering though, with all the big celebrities that we see and hear of today, is that what they did to help pursue their career? What else did they do if you know? Thanks!

A. That's awsome that your doing all ur school plays and everything, so keep that up. Some steps you need to take would be getting your headshots, and then finding an agent. Some acting schools bring in agents to search for talent, or there are now development centers that can help you find an agent. The agent will send you to auditions with casting directors and hopefully they will hire you. Then you just pretty much try your best to work your way up from there. As for singing, a few musicians have gotten discovered by making demo tapes and sending them to record companies. You really just want to sing anywhere you can get a gig, anywhere anyone will see you- its always a new chance to be discovered, such as school plays, talents shows,… [cont.]

Is voiceover acting something you have to be naturally good at ?
Q. Would you say that voiceover acting is something you have to just be naturally good at, or is it something anyone can grow to become good at? I'm trying to do some voiceovers for something I'm doing, I don't particularly want to since I don't talk a lot anyways, but do you think it would get much easier the more you try? Thanks. Peter. This was put after hawkthree and Kabs replies. The thing is I don't want to be an actor, I just have to do the VO as part of it.

A. -The only thing you don't have a lot of control over is whether you have a voice that is in demand for voiceover's. Generally a high pitched squeaky voice won't do no matter how well you act. Like a lot of things, the ability to do voiceovers will improve with proactice.

How can I get an acting agent so I can get into the acting business?
Q. I really want to be an actress and I've heard that you need an agent to get you auditions and stuff like that. How would I go about getting one. I live in a small town and acting agents don't just come knocking on doors.

A. You heard wrong. Agents don't sign people who want to be actors. You need to have several years of training and experience before you can get a legitimate agent. If you have not taken acting classes and have not been cast in leading roles in school and community theater for a few years, no agent is even going to look at you. You get an agent after you have experience and are willing to move to LA or NY to advance your career.

How important is it to study acting in college to be a successful actor?
Q. How important do you think it is to study acting (i.e. be an acting/theatre/drama/perf orming arts major) in college to be a good, skillful, and successful (not in terms of becoming some major motion picture star, but in terms of knowing your craft) actor?
Asked by myfairashley - Thu Oct 19 17:07:23 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. not really that much in terms of becoming a "star" like you stated. however, it can help cultivate your talent adn possibly lnad you on broadway much easier than what it takes to be a "star." most of the tv stars and movie stars could not do plays and even get past the first round of broadway casting (ex. Vin Diesel, Ice Cube, Paris Hilton, etc.).

How do you find a reliable acting agency?
Q. I'll be in Oklahoma for a while, and I was wondering where in oklahoma you find a reliable acting agency? (please don't say "talent agencies don't want nobodies" because I have a couple credits from indie film extras and local commercials) Anyone know of any acting agencies in oklahoma?
Asked by ??? - Wed Jun 11 04:25:21 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Reliable talent (acting) agencies are usually SAG/AFTRA affiliated or franchised. You can check for SAG franchised agents here: They also take a commission (10-20%) of what you make on jobs. They shouldn't charge you any upfront fees or require you to use their photographers/classes, although they can recommend some. Here is a complete list of agents in Oklahoma: These are agents I'd recommend: Visit their websites and do a background check with Better Business Bureau. Then follow submission guidelines or send in headshot & resume. Good luck! Hope I helped! Tip: Don't go with John Robert Powers or John Casablancas. They charge huge upfront fees and don't get you anywhere. (Scams!)

A. Certainly your acting coach can be your mentor. A mentor advises, a coach teaches you things to use as an actor. It certainly does make sense if your mentor has been or is a professional in your area.

A. There are many different methods to acting, one of the worst being "the method", It is good to dabble when you are young 'cause then you get an understanding of what works for you and what doesn't. What works for me is this: Acting is about relating, not pretending. At the end of the day, every great actor does that. Life experience is one of our greatest mentors as an actor. So the next time you get your heart broken, feel passionate about something, feel injustice regarding something, feel threatened, happy, crazy, remember where that feeling comes from and what it is you are trying to do. Funerals help you with drama. Prior to being at a relatives funeral I had a very different relationship with a scene that required me to cry. … [cont.]

Can you start an acting career at 33 and have femme fatale roles?
Q. My sister used to do acting, now she is throwing herself back in! She's a little frustrated at 33 she's told people won't consider he sexy and she'll be stuck with mom rolls at best. Is this true? Really, when did being in your thirties make women lose sex appeal roles!

A. Age isn't as big a barrier as it used to be in acting and other careers. Hardly anyone considers 33 to be "old" nowadays, except perhaps for certain roles. There are some women in their 50s who are still very sexy and attractive. Tell her to pursue her dreams.

A. You do not need one based on who else they turned out. You need to make a list of questions that are important to you, make some copies of that quiestionnaire, then make some phone calls. Ask who the teachers are, where they received their training, what their practical experience is, what class you would be placed in, do they allow auditing (can you take a free class to see if you like it), etc. Whether they teach a specific method, if you have to sign a contract locking you into a certain amount of time... stuff like that. Call several studios and whoever gives you answers you like, try them out. From what you've described it sounds like you should be in Speech & Debate in HS. That will help you get over some of your issues. … [cont.]
